[UPDATE] One Person Killed, Two Injured After Shots Rang Out At LA Mansion Party + NYC Rave Organizer Defends Secret Bridge Party

We’re still in the middle of a pandemic, yet people are partying as if COVID-19 has gone away. One person was killed, and two people were injured during a huge mansion party in Los Angeles that ended in a shooting. Meanwhile, people in NYC gathered under a bridge for a secret rave. Sigh.  More inside…

[UPDATE: 8/5/2020]

It was originally reported the mansion party in Los Angeles was possibly thrown for an NFL player. Turns out, no NFL players were involved. It's alleged the party was a gang-related bash.

TMZ has the latest:

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... they believe the Mulholland Drive mansion party that ended when shots rang out was a gang-related bash for the 8-Tray Gangster Crips, and they say they don't have any evidence to support an NFL player being there.

While a man who claimed to be the head of security told CBS L.A. the party was in celebration of a player recently getting drafted by an NFL team, our law enforcement sources say cops believe the NFL player scenario was a cover story if any trouble happened. It's maybe not the brightest excuse -- the NFL Draft was held in April and rookies are already in training camps.

No arrests have been made.

COVID-19 is more widespread than ever in the United States. However, people are attending parties as if we aren’t in the middle of a pandemic. U.S. leaders are struggling to enforce mask mandates and social gathering guidelines to keep the spread of the virus down, but people are tired of the pandemic and aren’t following the rules.

In Los Angeles, shots reportedly rang out during a huge party at a mansion in the upscale hillside neighborhood of Beverly Crest early this morning. According to a local news station, the shooting resulted in one person killed and two more were critically injured but are in stable condition.

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 40s were among the victims. A fourth person suffered a non-firearm injury while trying to flee from the gunfire. No names have been released at this time.

As of now, police aren’t sure what lead up to the shooting and no suspects have been identified or arrested at this time.

Jon Baird – a reporter at KNX1070 – claims the party may have been held for a pro football player:

A man named Kennie D. Leggett – who identified himself as head of security for the party – also said that party was thrown for a pro football player. He told CBSLA that the party was thrown to celebrate a player recently getting drafted to an NFL team, but he did not clarify the name of the alleged NFL player.

Prior to the shooting, neighbors called in complaints as the size of the party began to grow. It’s reported buses packed full of people were rolling up and dropping people off at the mansion. When police arrived Monday evening, they found about 200 people, according to reports.

The company that manages the rental property told CBSLA that it was the first it had heard of the party. The report claims the company advised the renters that the party was a serious violation of their rental agreement then asked them to leave.

Large gatherings are prohibited in L.A. due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, LAPD could not enter the premises to break up the party without a warrant. There were police on scene for traffic and noise control.

On the east coast…

In Brooklyn, hundreds of people gathered under the Kosciuszko Bridge Saturday night to turn up at a “secret” rave. Bars and clubs in NYC remain on lockdown due to the pandemic.

DJ Mazurbate – who was wearing a mask - was behind the turntables as people danced their lives away (no pun intended) at the unauthorized rave. According to the website Guest of a Guest, the event was supposedly a Black Lives Matter protest that “spiraled out of hand.” We have a feeling that was just the cover story concocted in case they were caught.

It took police until 4AM to break up the party, which was at least several hours after the event began.

The organizer - who wanted to remain anonymous - of the event spoke to Gothamist to defend throwing the bash.

The event was organized by a group called Renegade, which previously threw another rave at the same location on July 4th (billed as Black Lives Matter party). Organizers for the event acknowledged to Gothamist that this weekend's party got out of hand, but also defended the intentions behind it.

"If you think people aren't going to gather, you're a fool—there's no stopping that," said one of the organizers, a South Brooklyn native who asked to be anonymous so the blowback from the event doesn't affect his day-to-day life (the irony!). "The event got out of control because people wanted to come, people wanted to be out. People have been cooped up for so long. The pressure is building, and people need a release. It's already happening. We can do it more safely, or we can pretend it isn't happening."

The organizer stressed that bottles of water, masks and hand sanitizer were given out to revelers for free. There were signs up telling people to wear the masks, and they tried to remind people with announcements during the party as well. He estimated that 70-80% of attendees wore masks.

It doesn’t appear 70-80% of partygoers wore masks (over their faces) in the clips above and below, so we're not sure what his definition of "more safely" is:

Def seems like they tried to pull the "BLM" card to have a reason to host a party.

Listen, the pandemic isn't over just because you're over it:
