Legal Team Of Man Charged With Felony Murder For Allegedly Killing White Female Says He Was Standing His Ground

A man says he was standing his ground when he shot and killed a white woman. He claims the white woman was in a car with a “truckload of belligerent racists” who tried to run him and his girlfriend off the road. Now, a legal team for William Marcus Wilson has been formed to fight the murder charge. Does the Stand Your Ground Law apply to black people, seeing that all laws should apply to ALL people? Let’s discuss inside…

The Stand Your Ground Law became a hot topic in headlines in 2012 after the killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin by fake cop George Zimmerman and after a Florida woman – Marissa Alexander – was sentenced to 20 years for firing warning shots at her alleged abusive husband. While the law clearly protects people who aren’t black, people want to know will this law be upheld for a person of color?

A story about a biracial man allegedly shooting and killing a white female teen has folks revisiting the “Stand Your Ground” conversation. So here’s what went down….

On June 13th, William Marcus "Marc" Wilson - a 21-year-old biracial college student from Sharpsburg, Georgia - has been hit with felony murder and aggravated assault charges in the shooting death of 17-year-old Haley Hutcheson, a white teen from Bellville.

According to reports, William and his girlfriend (a white female) went out for a late Taco Bell run. While grabbing their food, the couple was allegedly harassed by a group of white people in a black Chevrolet Silverado. It’s alleged the group of white people began yelling racial slurs at the couple, calling his white girlfriend a “n*gger lover” and yelled “Your lives don’t matter.” It’s reported the white people in the car then attempted to run Williams and his girlfriend off the road (after following the couple from the Taco Bell drive-thru) while on the highway.

Terrified a mob of white people were literally chasing him and his girlfriend, William defended his life and the life of his girlfriend with a firearm he legally carried. After the Silverado allegedly struck his car on the highway, William grabbed his gun and shot at the truck. Two to three shots were reportedly discharged. One of those bullets traveled through the truck’s rear window and struck 17-year-old Haley Hutcheson in the head. She later died at a local hospital.

ON June 17th, William – who reportedly fully cooperated with law enforcement – turned himself in to authorities and has been held in Bulloch County Jail ever since.

Members on William’s legal team – including civil rights attorney Francys Johnson - are outraged the police totally omitted William’s self-defense claims from their investigation. Surprised? We aren’t. His team believes had William been white and was chased by a mob of black people he wouldn’t be charged or in jail.

“Make no mistake about it,” Francys Johnson told reporters. “We believe that if Marc Wilson was a white gentlemen that night, accosted by a truckload of angry, belligerent, possibly drunk Black men, and he used a legally-possessed firearm to defend himself and his passenger, that he would have been given a medal and not given a prosecution.”

“This case is yet another example of the disparate application of the law and the unjust criminalization of Black and Brown people without due process nor the support of the facts. We are committed to doing everything we can to stand with and support both this family and his legal counsel to ensure his safe and swift return home," says Rev. James Woodall, State President of the Georgia NAACP.

Francys Johnson also noted how the Statesboro Police Department mismanaged the case from the beginning by immediately criminalizing William.

William had a bond hearing scheduled yesterday (July 7th) where the judge set a preliminary hearing for an undetermined later date. The judge also continued issued a gag order in the case.

William’s father – who is black – said his son is a peaceful person and was raised to respect the law and others.

“His character is based on loving others. That’s who Marc Wilson is, who he always has been and will continue to always be,” his father, Pat Wilson, said.

There’s a petition demanding justice for William Marcus Wilson - with over 48,000 signatures - that you can sign here.

Below are Twitter reactions to William's story:

Damned if you, dead if you don't.

So, William was standing his ground against a group of white people who were allegedly yelling racial slurs and feared his life, yet was still charged with murder. What happened to the Stand Your Ground Law? Black people can't legally defend themselves in this country?

The Stand Your Ground Law is the same law that delayed the arrest of Ahmaud Arbery's killers. It's also the same law that George Zimmerman used to get off for the killing of Trayvon Martin.
