Police confirm a Texas teen is the female featured in a viral video where she licks the top of a Blue Bell ice cream carton. Since she's a juvenile, charges are up in the air. Also, read Blue Bell's response inside...

A video of a woman licking the top of a tub of Blue Bell "Tin Roof" ice cream went viral, which prompted an investigation by police. The video features a male voice behind-the-scenes encouraging the woman to lick the ice cream. She ends up opening the top, runs her tongue across the top, and places the half gallon back into the freezer at Walmart in Texas. The clip has been seen more than 12 million times on Twitter:

Folks started tagging Blue Bell and they responded that they were taking action:

Turns out, the girl in the video is a juvenile according to Texas law. Police in Lufkin, Texas confirm a female juvenile under the age of 17 is the person in the video licking the ice cream at a local Walmart before putting it back into the freezer.

Before the suspect's identity was confirmed, they had planned on charging her with a second degree felony of tampering with consumer product. That charge comes with a 2-to-20 year prison sentence and up to 10,000 in fines, according to reports.

The girl - who is from San Antonio - admitted to police she licked the top of the Blue Bell ice cream and put it back in the freezer. She was in Lufkin - which is about 300 miles east of San Antonio - because her boyfriend's family lives there, Lufkin police explained on their official Facebook page. They said both the girl and her boyfriend were "forthcoming" about what occurred and admitted to the act.

Investigators had a hard time identifying the actual culprit because, clout chasing.

Apparently, someone else with a similar screen name took credit for the act on Instagram.

"What made this case difficult is that a 'catfish' with a similar screen name (within one letter of the suspect’s screen name) began taking credit for it," police said in a Facebook statement. "It was actually the catfish and NOT our suspect who bragged on Instagram about the incident."

“Yeah, I really did that. You can call it Flu Bell ice cream now ‘cause I was a lil sick last week. Repost yourself doing this. Let’s see if we can start an epidemic (literally)," wrote the person, who ended up NOT being the perpetrator.

There were 4-6 women with similar screen names and appearances (including the catfish), so authorities had to rule out each one before finding the actual suspect.

Now, the case has been turned over to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department for consideration.

"We do not intend to pursue charges against her as an 'adult' and therefore what happens from here is at the discretion of the juvenile justice system," Lufkin police said. "We cannot speak for them as to what charge she will face in the juvenile justice system."

As for the boyfriend, authorities are currently discussing his involvement with prosecutors.

Today, Blue Bell released an official statement regarding the incident on their website, thanking the police:

Yeah, at 17, she clearly knows right from wrong. Hopefully her punishment fits the crime to teach her (and others) a lesson.  And hopefully companies start adding plastic seals because nobody needs nasty tongue bacteria with their Cookies & Cream.
