Disney just got a little more melanin-filled. The role everybody's been buzzing about in Hollywood for years just got booked, and one of our fave little sisters in the game secured the bag. Deets inside.
The Little Mermaid is getting a live-action re-make. That means the iconic role of Ariel is coming to life, and every young "It Girl" in Hollywood has been vying for the role. It was just announced Halle Bailey - from the super talented R&B duo Chloe & Halle - just secured the spot. Yassssss!
This is HUGE. While the 19-year-old has co-starred in Freeform's "Grown-ish" for the past two seasons, this will mark her feature film debut. Not bad for a YBF Teen who, along with her big sis Chloe (above), got signed to Beyoncé's Parkwood Entertainment label four years ago after being discovered on Youtube by the living legend herself.
Halle's proven she's got the acting chops and the bomb voice to make Ariel pop, so we're all the way here for it.
Director Rob Marshall said in a statement to Variety:
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement.
Variety revealed about the music:
“The Little Mermaid” will incorporate original songs from the 1989 animated hit as well as new tunes from original composer Alan Menken and “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca.
Halle joins Melissa McCarthy, who is set to play Ursula, and Awkwafina who has also joined the cast. Actresses like Zendaya have been vocal about wanting the role.
'Daya has even been rocking red wiggery during her Spiderman: Far From Home press tour.
By the way, Halle's voice on "Part of Your World"....Yes, please!
Oh, she's about to nail this. And Twitter thinks so too.
