Gayle King pulled a fast one on her bestie Oprah about the 2020 presidential run and Lady O set the record straight. The "CBS This Morning" anchor spills about how it went down in the newest issue of The Hollywood Reporter. Get the scoop inside...

Gayle King is at the top of her game and she's on everyone's radar. She scored the biggest interview of the year thanks to her calm demeanor as R. Kelly ranted and raved to try and persuade the public he's innocent of alleged sex crimes.

The media vet landed an epic viral moment (the picture of Kelly raising his arm at her) had everyone's attention with her explosive interview with the embattled singer. And it couldn't have come at a better time for the daytime news anchor.

King as gearing up for negotiations as her two-year deal with the network was set to expire in November. She covers The Hollywood Reporter's latest issue and tells them all about it.

"It's not like I planned it — like, 'I'm in contract negotiations, I need to try to do something here,' " King . "It didn't work like that. But I am not naive. It couldn't have come at a better time for me. It's just one of those things. Thank you, Jesus, whoever that is."

Several networks were knocking at her door, including CNN & ABC News.

"I got the distinct sense that Gayle had at least one foot out the door," says Anthony Mason, her friend and CBS This Morning co-anchor. "She wasn't gone, so there was always a chance of keeping her. But there was a fair bit of momentum in the other direction."

She ended up sealing the deal with CBS, doubling her salary to approximately $11 million annually.

"I feel a lot of privilege," says King, calling up the legacy of Edward R. Murrow. "I am now a part of that history. Let's see what we do."

As Oprah's bestie, fans wonder if she herself tried to convince Lady O to throw her name in the 2020 presidential run. Yep. She did two weeks ago, however, she didn't get the response she was looking for.

“She had just given a speech ... and it was so good,” King recalls in a behind-the-scenes photoshoot clip. “And I said, ‘You know, you give speeches like that, it just gives more fuel to us who really think it’s something you should consider.’”

“I was instantly slapped down,” King admits. “And not in a good way.”

Welp. There's that. Lady O says stop asking. It isn't happening.
