Billy Porter made sure everyone peeped his fashion game on the red carpet at the 2019 Tony Awards. And he made a bold statement with his ensemble. Deets on his outfit, video of him belting out a song from "Gypsy," and red carpet flicks of your Broadway faves inside....
One thing is for sure...Billy Porter loves a dramatic entrance!
After shutting down the Oscars and the Met Gala red carpets, he turned it up a notch for the 73rd Annual Tony Awards that went down at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. This time, he added a cause that needs awareness as the inpiration for his 'fit.
The "Pose" actor sashayed down the red carpet in a pro-choice "uterus" themed ensemble that was custom made by created by New York label Celestino Couture. The red and pink ensemble featured female reproductive organs to support women's abortion rights amid controversial anti-abortion bills being passed. He finished his look off with Orel Brodt pumps and an Emm Kuo NY bag.
The suit sparkled with over 30,000 Swarovski crystals and is described as a gender fluid evening suit.
Oh, and get this. The suit was reportedly made from a salvaged curtain backdrop from the Broadway production of "Kinky Boots." Porter won the 2013 Tony for best actor in a musical for his role in the show. Sweet! He was escorted down the carpet by his husband Adam Smith.
"It's a beautiful nod to Elizabethan couture," Porter told THR on the carpet. "At the fitting, we spoke about making a pattern on the train that was in the shape of a uterus, but not obvious, of course. And I thought it was awesome because women’s rights are under attack right now. I’m an advocate for all who are disenfranchised. None of us are free until we’re all free!"
He continued: "I really want to make sure that I’m showing up for all of the disenfranchised people I can so that we can find power in our unity. This government is trying to take away the woman’s right to choose and that’s unacceptable. No!”
He also spoke to HuffPost Black Voices about his ensemble. Check it:
